In the 1930's, English author Arthur Ransome wrote Swallows and Amazons, and after its great success, followed it up with a number of books enjoyed by children and adults alike. They tell the story of the young Swallows and the Amazon pirates as they have perilous adventures on the high seas (really the English lakes). The books are still in print. You can find out more about AR and his books by visiting The Arthur Ransome Society WWW pages.
I drew the rendition of the swallow and amazon flags seen at the top of this page, with the intention that it would be similar to the original illustration, but in vector (scalable) form. Therefore these illustrations can be printed at any size without loss of quality, and can also be used with pen plotters (which I have done quite successfully). The flags were drawn in Xfig, but I have also included EPS, GIF and HPGL versions.
You can get the Swallow and Amazon flags in various formats. You may also look at my earlier attempt at Swallow and Amazon flags.

I have also created a font, called Semaphore1, with Nancy's semaphore letters plus a few other special glyphs. I created the font largely using PfaEdit. The font is copyright, but I grant free use of it for non-commercial, non-profit purposes. If you use the font, I would love to hear from you. Files available:
