A wander through Auckland's Albert Park

L

We are taking a stroll through Auckland's own beautiful Albert Park, on a pleasant October afternoon, and we can see photographs of interesting parts of the park. Pictures can be enlarged by selecting them, and selecing the L beside each picture gets an even larger version. Because of the many graphics, this page may take some time to be received on slow links, so please be patient.

The art gallery, situated on the corner of the park, is the first thing we notice.

L

Proceeding around the corner, we soon reach the Wellesley Street gate, from where we go up a hill and into the shade of the trees which are thick in this part of the park.

L L L L

For a moment, we think we might be in Narnia.

L

Proceeding northeast we come to the museum, formerly the park keeper's cottage, and near it is the Helen Boyd statue.

L L L

The park has many beautiful gardens.

Here are some of the flowers that we see in the gardens.

Are you feeling thirsty after all the walking? Have a drink at one of the water fountains found throughout the park.

L

We now find ourselves coming in view of the fountain.

L L L L

To the east of the fountain are more flower beds.

One of the other occupants of the park:

There are plenty of seats on which to sit should you feel like a rest.

L

Moving on we find the poor broken weathervane,

and Queen Victoria.

L L

To the west is the flagpole, guns and trooper statue.

L L L

Also here is the Sir George Grey statue.

L L

In the far northeast we find the speaker's podium and the floral clock, which has had its hands removed.

L L

From here we can also see, just across Princes Street, Auckland University's famous tower of art.

L L

We now wander back around to the south, taking this opportunity to observe the broad expanse of the park, and a couple more flower beds, including some poppies.

L L L L L L

And we come to the odd-looking Throwback sculpture, commemorating the Art Gallery centennary in 1988.

L L

Coming back almost to where we started, we see the rotunda, which we missed on our way in, and the well.

L L

Zig-zagging back north along the western side of the park, we proceed beneath the canopy of the trees, and find a pleasant shady spot beside bank scattered with daisies.

L L L

Time is getting on and soon the lamps will be lit, and as we leave, we just glimpse the Albert Park sign through the tree branches.
