Text related tools
- 7up 2.09e
(71 Kbytes): An ASCII text editor- quick and efficient with several
useful features (like column-block editing, which is handy for ASCII
drawings, columns etc.).
(a text editor in case you didn't know is a word-processor program for plain
text (i.e. no underlining, bold text etc.) and is thus a lot smaller and faster
to use for things like programming, email, writing "readme" files, memos and
just about anything involving plain text).
- Everest
3.5e (127 Kbytes): Another ASCII text editor. Similar to '7up' but with
slightly different features. The package also includes an HTML template to
ease the contruction of web pages. Also has the ability to save text
with CR or CR/LF line-endings. Very fast and reliable.
- Edith 1.0
(67 Kbytes): Yet another ASCII text editor. What makes this one special is
the fact that it can be used as either a normal program or as an ACCessory!
It also has the ability to save text in UNIX mode (LF) or the usual
Atari/MSDOS (CR/LF) mode. There's an immediate scrollbar feature as well-
the text scrolls up and down as you move the scrollbar!!
(Having a text editor as an ACCessory proves to be pretty useful at times-
you can for example create HTML documents while testing what you've
done using a web browser- all without exiting one program to enter
the other one. This applies to normal TOS, as with multi-tasking operating
systems such as 'MagiC' you can run several programs at once anyway).
- UNIX2ST
(45 Kbytes): If you've come across ASCII text files which look pretty
garbled when trying to view them from the desktop it's a pretty big chance
that the file has a UNIX line-ending (LF) as opposed to the Atari ST/MSDOS
type line-ending (CR/LF).
The package holds the programs 'unix2st.ttp' and 'st2unix.ttp' so you can
convert either way.
(Even though there are more user friendly programs which do the same job,
this is one of the most reliable ones and has the added bonus of keeping
the time/date even after the file has been converted.
If your TOS supports it you can even drag the text file to be converted to
the unix2st/st2unix icon!)
- Blinex
1.6 (29 Kbytes): Does the same as 'UNIX2ST'/'ST2UNIX' above, but if
you also have problems with certain letters and symbols coming out as different
ones than originally intended you need to use this program instead.
Since different computer systems place their character sets differently these problems
occur.
Blinex converts to/from Apple Macintosh, PC and UNIX (ISO 8859-1/ANSI) character sets
which are the 3 most common ones used. Saves you a lot of time as you would otherwise
have to use a text editor and do a 'search/replace' for every single character that
came out wrong!
- DC-dirdump (4 Kbytes):
This little program allows you to create a text file with the contents of your
harddisk/disk drive. Very useful if you for example want to show someone which files
are inside a particular folder without having to manually write them down.

Printer tools
- Idealist 3.90
(362 Kbytes): A printer utility which allows you to print any ASCII text file
(i.e. 'Readme' files), email messages, '1stWord+', RTF documents etc. with the possibility to
select font, number of columns, one/both sides of sheets, email attributes and lots of other things
resulting in economical and efficient printing. Comes with lots of printer drivers.
In addition you might want to expand its use with the Idealist tools
(136 Kbytes) package containing utilities for printing out documents as a book, reformatting text for printing etc.

Disk/file tools
- Hcopy
1.7 (56 Kbytes): An excellent formatter/copier which formats MSDOS
(the disks will be usable on the ST as well as on PCs). Lots of useful
functions. Supports HD disk drives as well. Use this instead of the rather
limited and slow desktop formatter/copier!
- Selectric
(77 Kbytes): This is a replacement for the built in Atari
fileselector (which is a mess!), which in addition to selecting files also lets you
perform useful file tasks such as copy/move/delete/rename/find/show info and a whole
lot of other things, all without leaving the program
you're currently using! (it can be called upon from the accessory/CPX
which is included). Don't leave home without... eh..- it's highly
recommended!
- Maxidisk (21
Kbytes): A reset-proof (warm reset) RAM-disk. A RAM disk is part of the memory
set aside to act as a (super-fast) floppy disk or hard disk
drive, with the exception that you have to save the contents to a disk
or the harddisk before you switch the power off (or else you'll lose everything).
Very useful for work-sessions where you load/save files a lot while
working on them (especially handy when you have to wait for a disk
loading/saving), or when copying floppy disks:
Copy the desired files to the RAM disk, insert the blank disk, and copy
the files back to the floppy disk! (sure beats 'disk shuffling'!!) ;-)
- Bootsie
(48 Kbytes): With TOS 2.06 installed, booting takes a lot longer than with
older versions of TOS. Bootsie speeds this up by writing a special
bootsector to a floppy disk so that the harddisk will start booting a lot
faster. It can also display a small greeting as well as a 'pling' sound-
like on the Apple Macintosh.
- Autosort
4.1 (8 Kbytes): Resort the order of the programs in the 'Auto' folder-
useful for programs which have to be installed in a special order as many
programs are very picky about this and refuse to work if they aren't set up correctly.
(Can also be used to change the order of CPX modules, ACCessories or other
programs if needed)
- HD fdc (1
Kbyte): If you've upgraded your ST/STF/STFM/STE to TOS 2.06 you might have
noticed that the disk drive has started making a lot more noise than
before. This is due to the support of HD (1.44 Mbyte) disk drives with the
new TOS. With this program the 'step rate' can be set back to 3ms like it
was with the older TOS version, and the drive will quieten down
considerably. Put it in the 'Auto' folder.
- Checkdisk
(20 Kbytes): A useful utility for harddisk users. Defragment the drive, undelete files etc.
- ST-tools
(104 Kbytes): Undelete files from your hard disk/floppy disk drive etc.
- Date-time
(79 Kbytes): Change the date and/or time stamp of any file. Useful if the previous date is
wrong (incorrectly set clock etc.).

Replacement icons/icon tools
- Icons (1)
(195 Kbytes): ACCessories/CPX modules, various programs/applications, archivers/compression
programs (ZIP, LZH etc.), various Atari "Fuji" logos, AUTO folders,
calculators/spreadsheets/graphs/office etc, 3D images/technical drawings/CAD, cartoon/animal characters,
clipboard file/folder, communications (modems/file-transfer/terminals/Internet/WWW/email/news/MAUSnet,
various computers.
- Icons (2)
(199 Kbytes): Databases/address/phonelists/data-storage libraries, Atari desktop/desktop replacements,
disks (floppy disks/harddisks/CD-ROM/streamer/disk+file utility software), desktop publishing,
electronics/electronic design, emulation of other systems (Apple Mac, IBM etc.), filename extensions,
various folders, fonts/font-editors/font-utilities, games/entertainment.
- Icons (3)
(210 Kbytes): Graphics (pictures/graphic tools/graphic tools),
help/information/readme files/documentation, keyboard utilities, various logos/emblems,
mathematical software, mouse accelerators, movie players/films/animations,
operating systems (TOS, MagiC, MiNT etc.), programming
(assembler/BASIC/"C"/RSC files/RSC editors/Modula/Pascal etc.).
- Icons (4)
(199 Kbytes): Printers/printer utilities, RAM-disks, screen/display (screensavers, resolution,
accelerators), anti-virus/keys/TOS patches/encryption etc., setup/inf/preference files,
UNIX type command line interpreters/shells, "snapshot" type screen grabbers and scanners,
music/sound/MIDI, GEM/TOS/APP/PRG/TTP etc., system utilities/enhancers,
text editing/text-tools/word processors.
- Icons (5)
(81 Kbytes): Clocks/calendars/schedule-keepers, system tools, TOS 2.06 original icons,
trashcans/trashcan folders, viewers for text files, images and other files, various large icons
(use a RSC editor such as Interface for these, and not
Iconjuggler!).
- Animated colour/black+white icons
(70 Kbytes): Animated colour/mono icons (use a colour RSC editor such as Interface!).
These icons change their appearance when clicked on (i.e. a folder pops open etc.). You need a replacement
desktop such as Thing to be able to use them, and even though the icons are really colour icons they're
suitable for black/white systems with replacement desktops such as the one mentioned.
- Icon-juggler (24 Kbytes):
Organize icon setups for TOS 2.xx.
(This is NOT an icon-constructor, just an organizer for adding/deleting
icons and saving them as "DESKICON.RSC" files). Only suitable for black/white icons. For
colour icons you need to use Interface.
- Interface (718 Kbytes):
Edit .RSC files- translate programs, customize menues, edit graphics/desktop icons. Works with
'DESKICON.RSC' files as well (design/edit your own desktop icons for TOS 2.xx). Handles colour
and black/white icons.
- ORCS (162 Kbytes):
Another RSC editor. Useful for editing icons. Only handles black/white icons.
If you need to edit colour icons use Interface instead.

Fixes/enhancements
- Atari-support
(181 Kbytes): Atari made this package with fixes for all TOS versions
available- you will probably find something here you'll benefit from using.
- The
"Phantom typist" bug fixer (1 Kbyte) : If you've experienced strange things
happening when entering text (i.e. using a text editor, word processor
etc.) this patch may well cure your problems.
- NVDI
fixer (13 Kbytes): NVDI (New Virtual Device Interface) is a widely used
screen-accelerator (invaluable to most who have started using it). This
program fixes some minor bugs for versions 3.00 until 4.11 release 4.
- TOS
shell-function trap fixer (11 Kbytes): Fixer for some of TOS' shell function
calls; (shel_envrn(), shel_find(), shel_read(), and shel_writ().
- SOS
TOS 2.06 (223 Kbytes): A whole range of fixers as well as utilities for
TOS 2.06 (which is the latest TOS version for ST users).
- TOS-patch
2.06 UK (24 Kbytes): TOS 2.06 fixes, mainly for the United Kingdom
version.
- TOS
2.06 fixes/utilities (224 Kbytes): Yet another TOS 2.06 fix/utility
package- allows you to repatch TOS and finally replace the existing ROM
chips with your own programmed EPROMs -This file is in German.
- TOS
3.06 fixes/utilities (229 Kbytes): Same as above, but for TOS 3.06
-This file is also in German.
- VDI
fixer (5 Kbytes): This fixes a few bugs concerning the VDI workstations
(Virtual Device Interface) which several TOS versions had. -In German.
- Arrowfix
(19 Kbytes): A patch which fixes the window-scrolling bug.
This little program goes in the AUTO folder and removes a bug where a single
mouse-click is sometimes intepreted as two clicks, forcing the window to
scroll down two lines instead of one.
- Fserial
(52 Kbytes): Software for increasing the speed of the modem port.
- HSmodem 07
(124 Kbytes): Get better reliability from your modem as this adds better modem
routines than TOS is able to, and with added hardware circuitry such as
RSVE you can even use modern, fast modems above the original
19200 limit of the Atari ST!
- RSVE
(26 Kbytes): A relatively simple hardware project which modifies the Atari ST in such a way
that you can use high-speed modems, and not be bound by the standard 19200 baud limitations.
Works well together with HSmodem which is needed for the computer
to recognize the improved hardware.
